I recently downloaded Japanese-English Dictionary, a Mac OS X tool that provides extensive and updated files, containing thousands of Japanese words with their respective English translations. This software has proved to be a valuable resource for me in writing letters, sending emails, and making phone calls in Japanese.
One of the most helpful features is the ability to copy and paste words easily from the application to other documents. Furthermore, English translations provide information about whether the word is a noun, adjective, or verb. The application allows for grammatical abbreviations, like "adj-na," to produce dozens of Japanese adjectival nouns or quasi-adjectives with their respective English translations.
Variety is not an issue since Apimac Japanese-English Dictionary can use various Japanese-English dictionary files, which can be downloaded from the internet. However, the format must either be Unicode UTF-8 Tab-delimited or Japanese EUD EDICT. It is important to note that this tool does not support XML format files, thus prohibiting JMdict (Japanese-Multilingual Dictionary) files.
