JCap is an incredibly user-friendly application that enables you to add captions and descriptions to your collection of digital photographs with ease, ensuring that you can locate your photos later on. As a self-contained Java application, JCap doesn't require an external database to function properly.
I developed JCap because I wanted an app that could help me describe and caption each of my digital photos, locate them whenever required, use those descriptions in other apps without hassle and enable me to archive the images and descriptions in a single location. My main objective was to be able to discover my photos later on, share them with others in online galleries and view the descriptions even in 30 years from now, utilizing any computer at the time.
With JCap, you don't need a separate database software or web server to operate. Captions, descriptions & keywords are stored as plain text files in the same folder as the images, enabling them to be read by any app capable of reading text files. This means that you can use any tool or application you want to read and manipulate the captions to suit your needs, such as notepad, scripting languages, grep, album generating software, among others. Archiving captions and descriptions is simple, as all you need to do is copy the image and the associated caption/description file to the archive location (e.g., burning to CD).
It's crucial to note that JCap is not an online photo gallery creator, nor does it create thumbnails. It's not an image editing application, and it won't modify your images for any reason. There are many fantastic apps available that can fulfill these tasks. If you're looking for gallery creation software, JAlbum is one of the best options available and can work with the caption and description data that JCap generates.
The only requirement for JCap is Java 1.4 or higher. The latest release has drag and drop support, allowing you to drag images or folders from your file browser onto the JCap window to open them.
