Jooky

July 20, 2006
Jooky is a software that functions as an mp3 controller.
Version 0.99h
License GPL
Platform Linux
Supported Languages English
Homepage soomka.com
Developed by Thomas Glascock
Jooky is an efficient mp3 controller that offers several ways to control it, including running it in the foreground via curses screen, running in the background and controlling through itself as a client from another host or the same host via tcp/ip, and running it from /etc/inittab and controlling it similarly.

Jooky is capable of playing in random order (scramble), and the client/server feature enables smooth control with LIRC (Linux infrared control). Running the command line-based server is incredibly simple - just run jooky with no options in a terminal, and you'll get a ncurses-based screen interface with a legend at the bottom of the screen showing you how to use it. It takes less than a minute for you to learn.

Jooky is user-friendly and intuitive, and if you know vi, using this software will be even simpler. Any files that can't be played due to the lack of a suitable player will be dimmer than the others. You can navigate through the mp3 files using the Up and Down arrows, which are similar to j and k. The Right and Left arrows are for adjusting the volume, while Pgup and Pgdn take you up and down half a screen, similar to capital J and capital K.

Furthermore, the latest version (0.96) has a newly introduced "m" that changes the Mixer knob, and the Right and Left arrows are for adjusting the current knob. However, aumix and read/write permission to /dev/mixer are required for the same.

As for the system requirements, the software requires Linux on a 66 MHz Pentium (absolute minimum) and at least one of the following in your path - mpg123, ogg123, mp3blaster, sox, freeamp, and aumix in your path. Besides, you will need a sound card, and /dev/dsp should not be taken by any other programs or daemons, and jooky checks to see if it is open before starting the player. More command in your path, libvorbis, and libvorbisfile libraries and header files (only for ogg files), and libid3tag and id3tag.h files (from the "mad" project) are also required.

The latest update also supports the JOOKY environment variable, which contains the startup directory for jooky to chdir to when starting up. Overall, Jooky is a reliable and user-friendly mp3 controller that is easy to use for both beginners and experts.
