Kana no quiz project is a software tool designed to help users memorize the Japanese kana (hiragana and katakana). The method is straightforward: kana appear randomly, and users must determine their transcription in rõmaji (Hepburn). There are multiple answer choices, but only one is correct. This approach is effective at helping users memorize kana and their transcription, giving them the ability to pronounce them correctly.

Kana no quiz has been translated into numerous languages, and it offers a variety of configurable quiz options. The kana images were initially modeled in SVG and are distributed under the Free Art License. The software's option panel allows users to fine-tune their quizzes, including selecting particular groups of kana to train upon. To begin, hiragana and katakana are separated into large sets based on their type ("Basic," "Modified," "Combined"), with an additional "Additional" set for katakana only. These sets are then made up of smaller portions containing 5/6 kana, ordered alphabetically. Users can choose which set or portion to practice and even select multiple parts of different sets according to their need and level.

Kana no quiz includes progressive learning, meaning it's suitable for learners at any level. Users can start centrally and gradually work up to more challenging levels as they feel more comfortable. Furthermore, they can check their progress by viewing the quiz results displayed after each round. They can increase the number of possible answers in the random list, or answer just through the text entry. The software relies on Python, The Gimp Tool Kit, and PyGTK.

The latest release of Kana no quiz features vocal pronouncing of all kana (with male and female voices), switchable kana image themes (with the addition of a second theme, taken from the GPL program "Kana Test"), faster loading, and enhanced design of the big kana, a table window, and an updated Polivanov system (new transcribed kana). Overall, Kana no quiz is an excellent tool for anyone looking to master the Japanese kana, whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned pro.
