Regarding SimpleCaptcha, it's a great product, but it has been unmaintained for some time. Running it with JDK 1.5 can pose some problems, and there are a slew of bug reports, patches, and forum messages. Unfortunately, there haven't been any new releases or changes in about two years.

If not SimpleCaptcha, why not use jCaptcha? Although jCaptcha is a wonderful project, it's primarily a library rather than a quick solution. While it produces default captchas that are secure, some are too difficult to read and not suitable for public use. Additionally, jCaptcha is slow and requires your time to master its API to produce a useful result.

That's where kaptcha comes in. We need a simple and reliable solution that's easy to implement. This project aims to be a modern, supported version of existing code. Finally, while starting with a "k" might not be the most original reason to choose the name kaptcha, it works for the company.
