KDailyMirror

KDailyMirror is a backup software tool that is designed to automatically store various types of files such as music, pictures, documents and more onto a second hard disc. This software utilizes a script that uses the cronjob to copy data through rsync without changing the user, group, owner and date of your files. Additionally, all files under the hard drive will be checked by each copy job and the copy job priority is set to extreme low, ensuring that it does not disturb your work.

If anything goes wrong while using KDailyMirror, a dialog box will pop up and provide you with information on what went wrong. Some key features of this software include automatically mirroring new or modified files in the background, checking every file by transfer, creating logfiles from transfer, checking health status from both hard discs and automatically mounting and unmounting target hard discs.

To use KDailyMirror, you will need two local hard discs such as USB or FireWire HDDs, cron, KDE 3.X (though it should work with KDE 4.X as well), Kdialog, rsync and smartmontools. The installation process for KDailyMirror involves opening the kdailymirror file with an ASCII editor and changing the path and device in the script. Once modified, you can copy the kdailymirror file to /etc/cron.daily using the root user and run KDailyMirror using the kde command line.

This software has been tested on Kubuntu 8.04 and the latest release includes a bug fix that ensures only root is allowed to run kdailymirror. Overall, KDailyMirror is a useful tool for those looking to automate their data backup process and check for any issues that may arise.
