KDEmod is a modular and optimized version of the K Desktop Environment designed for ArchLinux, featuring customized tweaks and improved functionality.
KDEmod is a modular and tweaked version of the K Desktop Environment tailored specifically for ArchLinux users. This project includes additional patches for enhanced functionality and appealing visual effects, as well as a slightly improved QT3 installation. The software is available in Arch's standard .pkg.tar.gz package format for i686 and x86_64.
The concept for the KDEmod desktop was conceived in June 2006 due to Arch Linux's KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle. Arch's KDE distributions are built from the standard, unmodified KDE distribution, hence providing the whole KDE desktop without modifications or additions. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, many users may not require a full-fledged KDE Desktop installed with applications they rarely utilize.
Arch is a small distribution, and the developers have their missions to improve the best distribution on the planet (tm), so KDEmod was introduced. KDEmod is designed to offer a fully modular installation of KDE with almost all the features and bling some larger distributions have with KDE and even more cutting-edge features. By utilizing KDEmod, users can enjoy the sophistication, stability, and feature-richness of KDE. However, as a work in progress, any glitches found should be reported.
KDEmod boasts nearly all KDE apps and modules and is available as separate versions in the repositories. The team responsible for KDEmod continues to improve them while providing a refined and optimized KDE desktop for ArchLinux. It will be enhanced and supported until the end of the KDE3 life-cycle. When KDE4 is released, the development team will determine if it is necessary to continue the distribution.
