KDeskBar applet uses web shortcuts in KDE to perform searches from the panel bar.
I recently tried out KDeskBar, a kicker applet designed for quick and efficient web searches through the panel bar. It utilizes configured web shortcuts in KDE to make searching a breeze. However, I did notice that it's best used with horizontal panels as it doesn't display correctly on vertical ones.
The installation process was fairly straightforward. I just had to navigate to the directory containing the source code package and type './configure' to configure the package for my system. It's worth noting that if you're using 'csh' on an old version of System V, you may need to type 'sh ./configure' instead to prevent 'csh' from trying to execute 'configure' itself. Running 'configure' can take a while, but it provides updates on which features are being checked for.
Next, I compiled the package by typing 'make' and installed it (along with any data files and documentation) with 'make install'. Once I was finished, I could remove the program binaries and object files from the source code directory by typing 'make clean'.
One new feature in the latest release of KDeskBar is the addition of focus and auto select all text after choosing a new engine. This feature makes it even easier to perform quick and efficient searches directly from the panel bar. Overall, I found KDeskBar to be a useful tool for streamlining web searches within KDE.
