Keyclick

Keyclick, a preference pane designed specifically for Mac OS, is a software tool that provides subtle audio feedback for every keystroke recognized by the system. In the past, keyboards were made with premium key switches that generated a resounding click when a key was snapped over. Most modern-day keyboards, however, use rubber domes that provide a similar tactile feel but lack the satisfying sound experience.

Research has shown that the perception of keyboard crispness is correlated with audio feedback. Keyclick addresses this issue by providing users with the sound feedback they crave, while also improving on the original design. While there are existing programs that imitate the sound of an old-fashioned typewriter, they don't appear to be geared towards serving as a practical touch typing aid.

For the best results, sound feedback should be subtle and non-distracting. With Keyclick, users can adjust the volume up or down without even having to visit the Keyclick Preferences Panel. Simply press Cmd-Shift-( for softer, or Cmd-Shift-) for louder sound. Additionally, the volume adjusts in line with the system volume setting, making it easier to adapt to varying noise levels in your surroundings.

Many avid computer users have fond memories of a favorite keyboard, like the Apple Extended keyboard (saratoga) or IBM Model M. If you find your current keyboard to be mushy or have ever longed for the crisp feel of an older keyboard, Keyclick is worth a try.
