Klax

November 13, 2005
Klax is a Live CD featuring the current version of KDE Desktop Environment 3.5.
Version 3.5 RC1
License GPL
Platform Linux
Supported Languages English
Homepage ktown.kde.org
Developed by Klax Team
Klax is a great GNU/Linux Live-CD that is very similar to Slax. It utilizes the same Linux Live scripts and comes equipped with KDE 3.5 Alpha. This version of Klax is perfect for getting an impression of KDE 3.5 development, verifying if bugs still exist, discovering new ones, and creating screenshots.

One of the most significant advantages of Klax is the ISO size of 348 MB. Additionally, it includes all KDE 3.5 Alpha modules, except kdebindings. Klax comes with Qt 3.3.4 with qt-copy patches, K3b 0.12.3, and KOffice 1.4.1, so you can easily get started right out of the gate.

However, there are a few features you should be aware of before using Klax. For instance, there are translations of interface and documentation, but you'll have to refer to Slax documentation instead of Klax's own. The software doesn't come with a guarantee, so there's no promise that it will work, not damage your system or waste your bandwidth. Additionally, sophisticated tools are not installable on the hard disk, and there is a lack of graphical configuration tools. If you don't have DHCP, you'll have to use a console-based "netconfig" tool. Klax's goal was to be as small as possible, so it doesn't include a compiler, build tools, headers, man pages, non-KDE docs, or how-tos, etc. Finally, there are no bells and whistles that KDE 3.4 can make use of, such as composite extension, DBUS/HAL, speech systems, xscreensaver, or ZeroConf.

If you're ready to get started with Klax, it's quite simple. All you need to do is boot from the burned CD and type "klax gui" at the boot prompt. Alternatively, you can log in at the console prompt as "guest" with the password "guest" and run "startx" to start the X-server. "netconfig" is the tool you need to configure your network, while "xconf" configures the X-server for higher screen resolution.

In terms of what's new and improved in the latest version of Klax, it's important to note that this version contains KDE 3.5 RC 1. Additionally, Klax includes an ISO size of 342 MB, all KDE 3.5 RC 1 modules except kdebindings, Qt 3.3.4 with qt-copy patches, K3b 0.12.7, and KOffice 1.4.2. With these features and more, Klax is a fantastic option for anyone in need of a reliable GNU/Linux Live-CD.
