Krypt

Krypt is a KDE graphical user interface (GUI) that simplifies the process of managing volumes encrypted with LUKS. This application will sit in the system tray and grant the user quick access to the list of all volumes encrypted with LUKS on their device. Users may decrypt, encrypt, mount, and unmount these devices with ease.

Krypt also monitors HAL activity and responds with a password prompt. The media manager then automatically kicks in and executes the appropriate action. If this does not occur due to a device being previously used and removed, Krypt can still mount it by using the menu entry. The volume will be mounted in the same location as the media manager would do it. Krypt comes with a list of ignored devices where the user can place volumes that they do not want Krypt to handle (such as encrypted and permanently decrypted partitions like encrypted /home).

Another useful feature of Krypt is that it can automatically encrypt all volumes that become unmounted. This occurs when the user employs the KDE media manager's ‘Safely remove’ option. Krypt was initially based on Kryptomedia tool, which was originally created for OpenSuse as a patch for the original KDE. However, this required modification of certain KDE files whenever it was updated. This new software doesn't need any patches.

It is important to note that Krypt requires both HAL and DBus daemons running to work correctly. Before reporting any issue with Krypt, make sure that both of these services are working. If the user encounters a scenario where Krypt's password prompt shows up and does not disappear after inputting the correct password, this is not the fault of Krypt. The issue is due to HAL's inability to handle cryptosetup correctly. The only solution to this is to install a version of HAL that has been patched with cryptsetup_temp.patch.
