LeopardPreferredMailCharset

As a software for email management, Mail.app is a commonly used application for Mac users. While there are certain features available on older MacOS versions, such as Tiger, those features might not be supported on the later versions. For instance, specifying the default character set as ISO-2022-JP was feasible on Tiger by a simple command of 'default write com.apple.mail NSPreferredMailCharset ISO-2022-JP'. But, when Leopard OS was released, the Mail.app did not have this feature.

To address this gap, a utility called LeopardPreferredMailCharset was developed. It enables users to set the default character set in Leopard's Mail.app as they could in Tiger. Installing this utility is pretty easy. One can copy the file 'LeopardNSPreferredCharset.mailbundle' into either of the two directories - ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/ or /Library/Mail/Bundles/. Following that, enter the below commands in Terminal.app:

defaults write com.apple.mail EnableBundles -bool true
defaults write com.apple.mail BundleCompatibilityVersion 3

Now, launch Mail.app, and if the installation was successful, a console message 'PreferredCharset initialized.' will be displayed. With LeopardPreferredMailCharset, users can easily manage their email as per their preferences.
