Localscan is a simplified interface for nmap, a popular network exploration tool, designed for non-technical users to easily scan local networks for connected devices and their characteristics.
Localscan is a software solution that can be used by administrators to facilitate their work. This software was built on top of nmap and its primary goal is to filter out unnecessary information returned by nmap scans of a particular subnet. By providing a list of "ignore this host/port combo" rules, localscan can help admins reduce the amount of useless data.
As a system administrator at a well-known educational institution, I found it necessary to run a port scanner on my subnet every so often. Unfortunately, my inbox was quickly filled with irrelevant information from these scans. Even though I had created a filter to help me identify important data, other admins refused to use it as it was written in Perl – something that not everyone was familiar with.
Because of this, I wrote Localscan 2.0 to be much more user-friendly to those who are not skilled in Perl. This updated version simplified the user interface by providing a plaintext external data file that contains all the user-configurable settings for the scanner – localscan.conf.
To help you get started, the software package contains four files, including a readme file, a quickstart guide, the Localscan.pl script, and a script for generating the localscan.conf file called Make_conf.pl. Overall, Localscan provides a straightforward solution for those who need a reliable and easy-to-use scanner for their network.
