lollipop

Lollipop is a POP3 server that aims for speed and is nearly compliant with RFC 1939. Its main focus is to cater to users who store a large volume of messages (>4000) on their server. Lollipop only supports the maildir storage format.

This program was developed to solve a problem that the creator faced. The issue was that they had a small server at home that collected emails from various addresses through fetchmail and exim local delivery. The creator wanted to store all their emails (over 6000) on the server in maildir, primarily because it was an archived machine. However, using IMAP was slow even on fast ethernet LAN. Switching to POP3 with leave on server option was a bit better but the statistic step was incredibly sluggish. Eventually, the creator decided to develop this POP3 server for this particular task.

This special POP3 server, called Lollipop, supports memory and reports only new mails as new after the last download for that location. It supports only maildir, as the mailbox isn't optimal for this solution. Your maildir must be in ~/.maildir, and if you use maildir with another name, you need to create a link to it.

To configure the server, all you need to do is change the LAN address to your LAN (e.g., 192.168.1.1) in the script's beginning. To use the server, start it in the background (./lollipop.pl &) and ensure that you are not using another POP3 server.

The latest release of Lollipop has fixed the CAPA in AUTH state. In summary, Lollipop is an efficient and fast POP3 server that is ideal for those who store a large volume of messages in their mailbox.
