Lord of the Rings Map is a useful software application for enthusiasts of J.R.R Tolkien's Middle-Earth. Initial development was steady, but the last released version (0.83) came out in 1999 due to the author's shift to Linux as his daily operating system. Later, with the release of Kylix open-edition, the developer's desire to work on lotrmap returned, leading to a complete rewrite. However, the use of Kylix met limitations, and so he decided to learn C++ and code lotrmap in that language, taking only a week to do so.
