This protocol employs XML and is designed for Machine-To-Machine communication.
The M2MXML project is aimed at developing an open-standard XML based protocol for Machine-To-Machine (M2M) communications. It offers a Java API which is also language agnostic. With a primary design philosophy of simplicity, M2MXML strives to overcome the issues of current protocols which tend to be difficult to understand and too verbose for small devices with limited communications bandwidth.
In the current scenario, most M2M applications are bespoke, requiring the development of custom communication protocols. M2MXML aims at establishing an open-standard protocol which can be adopted by device manufacturers and M2M application developers. This will, in turn, lead to the creation of a certain amount of interoperability that is not present at present.
To facilitate the use of the protocol by M2M application developers, the M2MXML project also includes the development of open-source APIs and code libraries. It is worth noting that M2MXML is licensed and distributed under the terms of the GNU Library or Lesser General Public License (LGPL).
