Mckoi SQL Database is a Java-based software that serves as a complete SQL-92 relational database management system. The software's versatility is evident in its ability to function as either a dedicated multi-client, multi-threaded database server, or as an embedded database within a Java application. Apart from ease of use and maintenance, the engine is designed to handle sophisticated database development tasks with ease.

The software's JDBC 2.0 driver ensures that the software is well-optimized for users. However, to use Mckoi SQL Database, users will need a JavaTM runtime environment version 1.2 or higher. Sun provides Java runtime environments compatible with Win32, Solaris, and Linux on their website, while IBM offers various Java runtime environments for a wide array of platforms.

After installing Java on the system, users can proceed to unpack the Mckoi distribution file to a directory in their file system. With this step completed, users can then create a database and begin developing their database application.

Creating a Database is a straightforward process. Before developing a database application, users need to create and configure a blank database. The database configuration file describes all the configuration properties of the database; these are covered in the next section. The software comes with a default configuration that looks for a database at path ./data in the file system.

To create a database, users should go to a prompt, change to the Mckoi Database distribution directory, and type java -jar mckoidb.jar -create "admin_user" "aupass00". However, the software does not advise using this username or password in a production system. Users should choose a username and password carefully as the created user has full control over the database. When the command completes, a sub-directory called data will have been generated, storing database data. A sub-directory called log is also created, storing debugging and query log information.

Database Configuration is another unique feature of Mckoi SQL Database. Running the mckoidb.jar package looks for a file named db.conf in the current directory. The file contains several variables that determine where the database looks for information and other user-definable properties. If users change the configuration file location, they must specify it when running the database. The configuration file can be renamed and copied to a different location, and users can edit it using a text editor. The default configuration file that ships with the software contains extensive comments explaining each variable's function.
