Midge

Midge is an exceptional linux mini-distribution that has been designed to cater to ADM5120 based routers, including the well-known Edimax BR-6104K. It is an excellent option for those who want to have a more customized software set up on their routers. Midge employs the use of ipkg package management for easy installation of new software.

Midge has been divided into three versions: jffs2, tmpfs, and usb. The difference between these versions lies in the type of root filesystem they use. The jffs2 version utilizes the jffs2 root filesystem, which comes with a small (~512k) initial rom filesystem, and a large (~800k) filesystem for user data. This version is ideal for systems that have several services running or people who intend to install custom software. The jffs2 filesystem has an advantage because it uses a journal filesystem, eliminating the need to worry about rootfs safety.

The tmpfs version utilizes the tmpfs root filesystem, which has a large (1280k) initial rom filesystem and a small (256k) data partition. It is an excellent option for typical routers. Lastly, the usb (usb1) version uses a root filesystem located on a USB device such as USB-Flash or USB-HDD.

The latest release of Midge includes several new features, such as an upstream update of OpenWrt kamikaze, more modular firmware, USB-Storage support, and bugfixes. Overall, Midge is a versatile and reliable software solution that is definitely worth considering if you are in search of a customizable router setup.
