MOAI is an essential software tool for academic institutional repositories dealing with relational metadata and asset files. The Python module allows users to aggregate content from various sources, transform it, and store it in a database. The contents from the database can then be published in multiple OAI feeds, each with its own configuration.

A significant feature of MOAI is its flexible system for combining records into sets, which can be used in the feed configuration. It also offers a simple yet highly customizable authentication system to control access to assets and the feeds.

MOAI has been specifically developed for universities and contains a lot of hard-earned wisdom. Since its inception in 2007, many features have been added to the software. In late 2008, the software was refactored and packaged as the standalone MOAI system. It can work collaboratively with other repository software that has an OAI feed like Fedora Commons, EPrints or DSpace. MOAI can also be used directly on an SQL database or a folder of XML files.

The MOAI project embraces the philosophy that every repository is unique and continually evolving. As such, Metadata is always changing, evolving and improving, and MOAI aims to make it as easy as possible to add or modify parts of your repository services stack. It achieves this without sacrificing power and encourages the reuse of components.

MOAI has several interesting features that are not found in most OAI servers. One such feature is its ability to harvest OAI data, thereby enabling MOAI to work as a pipe as OAI data is reconfigured, cached and enriched while passing through the MOAI code. Other features include turning metadata values into OAI sets on the fly to create new collections, using OAI sets as filters for records shown in a feed, and working efficiently with relational data. Moreover, the software provides simple and robust authentication through integration with Apache web servers while serving assets through Apache with configurable authentication rules.

In summary, MOAI is an incredibly powerful and flexible system for managing academic institutional repositories dealing with relational metadata and asset files. Its emphasis on customization and flexibility enables users to build a unique, tailored repository system that continues to grow and evolve.
