As a demoware version, MP3 SX provides a way to convert your existing stereo MP3 files into MP3 Surround for free. However, it comes with limitations as stereo PCM files, such as those in a .wav format, are not supported in this version. To enjoy MP3 Stereo eXtended files, you must have a MP3 Surround Decoder or Player, preferably version 2.0 or newer. The benefit of MP3 Surround is its backward compatibility to MP3 Stereo, enabling you to play files on any MP3 Stereo Player, though without the advantages of multichannel reproduction.

The MP3 SX package comes with two types of software, MP3SXconv and MP3SXconv_CMDL, which include MP3 Stereo eXtended Converter in drag-and-drop GUI tool and command-line tool variations, respectively. The supported input file formats include MP3 bitstream, stereo, with a 44100 Hz sampling rate, and either 128 Kbps or 192 Kbps CBR, as well as medium to high quality VBR.
