Mumps is a powerful programming language that boasts a native hierarchical data base facility. It has an impressive following within the biomedical community, where it has been widely adopted for both clinical and commercial applications. Originally developed at the Massachusetts General Hospital in the mid-60s, Mumps has, over time, earned a reputation as a language that is well-suited to the representation of medical records. One of the key selling points of Mumps is its easily-manipulated, multi-dimensional data base, which makes it particularly well-suited to the needs of those who work in the medical field.

Despite its age, Mumps has evolved over time - and now boasts both ANSI and DOD-approved standards, along with an additional ISO standard (ISO/IEC 11756:1992). Mumps has always been particularly adept at providing first-rate string handling support, and its ability to tackle multiple concurrent tasks in low-memory environments is also a selling point that has helped to maintain its popularity over the years. Overall, Mumps is a versatile and well-respected programming language with a lot to offer its users.

This compiler implements much of the most recent Mumps standard, as detailed in the accompanying manual. When using this software, Mumps programs are translated to standard C before being compiled to binary executables. The package also comes with a range of useful additional features, such as the run-time functions source code, examples written in Mumps, and a stand-alone Mumps Interpreter for those running Windows XP or Linux.

The MDH (Multi-Dimensional and Hierarchical Data Base Toolkit) is a Linux-based, open-source, toolkit of portable software that has been designed to support fast, flexible, multi-dimensional and hierarchical storage, retrieval, and manipulation of data bases. This impressive resource has been written in C and C , and is available under the GNU GPL/LGPL licenses in source code form. It is worth noting that those who wish to take advantage of the features offered by MDH will need to install the Mumps Compiler first. Nevertheless, for those who are looking for a powerful and effective toolkit that can be used to work with multi-dimensional and hierarchical databases, MDH is well worth exploring in greater detail.
