A program for producing algorithmic MIDI music interactively on soft synth or sound card. It offers a range of open-ended composing modules to enhance creativity without inhibitions, instead of the canned me-too riffs or restrictions.

Despite its ease of use, MusicWonk is a sophisticated program with over 200 built-in modules and functions. This makes it one of the most powerful algorithmic composing programs available. With MusicWonk, you can effectively "play" and record MIDI synthesizers, soft synths, and sound cards directly to a standard MIDI file.
Developed by John Dunn, MusicWonk is essentially the same program as ArtWonk, but it does not include animation graphics components. It is the successor to a long line of graphical, modular, and interactive algorithmic composing programs inspired by the big analog modular synthesizers. Dunn's first program in this lineage, MusicBox, was released to the public domain in 1986.
MusicWonk can be used to create analog synthesizer style step sequencers and much more. The software gives you algorithmic composing tools of all kinds, designed to be used by musicians. It is essentially a program language specialized for creating music, but it is not a text-based language like Java, C, or Lisp. Instead, it is a visual direct manipulation language that does not require weeks or months to learn.
To get started with MusicWonk, you simply select graphical modules from a pop-up menu, drag and drop their connections and interactions, and listen to the results in real time as you build and modify your piece. Overall, MusicWonk is an intuitive and powerful software that offers a unique approach to algorithmic composing.
Version 4.4: Can run from USB drive, released as freeware.
