MySQL-MP3 is an impressive software that offers a MySQL-based MP3 streamer to its users. If you are familiar with GNU MP3 Streamer, then you'll be glad to know that MySQL-MP3 offers the much-awaited database version of the popular software.

Initially, the developer avoided undertaking this project as it was an intricate task that posed several challenges. However, in a rare moment of enthusiasm, the developer created a simple prototype. The MySQL-MP3 software handles most of the essential processes, including indexing an MP3 collection to a database, browsing and streaming music, collecting statistics, and searching for music.

Although it's not a complete project, this software is useful and efficient. However, you should follow the instructions carefully, and please note that some features are missing, such as support for non-MP3 media, and tag support. Feedback and comments are appreciated, as they will help make the software better.

MySQL-MP3 requires MySQL, DBI, and HTML::Template, and consists of two parts: an indexer and a daemon. The indexer works by scanning a directory and recursively looking for media content, which it inserts into a database. On the other hand, the daemon listens to network ports, responds to visitors' requests, and provides information stored in the linked database.

The software works as follows: The indexer inserts data into two tables: one for directories and one for files. These tables allow for efficient processing of the directory and file indexes. The user interface is built using template files that the HTML::Template module processes before sending the finished product to the browser.

When a file or directory request comes in, the server reads the information from the database and decides what to do with it. Currently, there are some special URLs that the server handles first, followed by requests used to build the user interface.

These special URLs include:

/stats/: Showing the server statistics page.

/search/: Showing the search page.

/play/xxx.mp3: Streaming the file with ID 'xxx' to the client.

/dir/xxx.m3u: Streaming a playlist containing all the files in the directory ID 'xxx' to the client.

Overall, the MySQL-MP3 software is an excellent choice if you're looking for an efficient MP3 streamer. Although it has a few missing features, the software's essential processes are handled well, making it a valuable tool for MP3 indexing and streaming.
