NERD (Network Equipment & Resources Database) is an excellent database providing flexible support for various network resources. Its main purpose is to centralize management data into one place, which can be used as a source for other management systems. However, the original data is always saved in one place. Initially created in 2001, NERD went through several phases, during which its scope was changed a few times. Finally, all versions with all functionalities were combined to create a single system that covered all areas.
The ultimate goal of the application is to function as a warehouse for devices, locations, contracts, authentication, IP management, MPLS, VLAN, and potentially more exciting modules. NERD is not a management system, but rather a network-management-aiding-framework. It does not collect traps, view events or manage trouble tickets, as there are already numerous systems on the market with such features. NERD is meant to serve as a centralized network data source.
The application is now available for managing CISCO devices, but it was designed to support other vendors as well. Some of the key features of NERD include a Model-View-Controller Framework, written in PHP5 (OOP), based on MySQL (other databases can be used), modular and flexible structure, PHPTAL used as a templating system, secure authentication using encrypted passwords with random salts, encrypted passwords stored in the database, safe SQL queries, extendable modules, password recovery via email, locations management (cities, POPs), device management (models, devices, roles), network devices access management (with embedded TACACS+ daemon), and automatic, periodic CISCO config backup.
