NetSplitter is a network load-balancing software that operates at the user-level, distributing traffic among servers to improve efficiency and reduce downtime.
NetSplitter is a network load-balance software that can be used by users at any level. The software is designed to work like a transparent-proxy to balance TCP connections on multiple links. However, Linux NAT add/remove code is incomplete. To handle this, NetSplitter uses the system() function to run 'iptables'.
To redirect packets, the user needs to modify the iptables rule by entering a command similar to the transparent proxy to proxy 5122. The LAN interface and address - eth0 and 192.168.2.0/24 respectively - and the netsplitter address and port - 192.168.2.1:5122 - must also be specified. Additionally, the user must not forget to add UDP and ICMP NAT configuration.
NetSplitter also features an optional local-nat rule. In the iptables rule, the user needs to type in the values in /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_local_port_range from 1024-4999, and the netsplitter address - 192.168.1.1.
The next step requires the user to configure the netsplitter.conf file by entering the INTERFACE, network address, and link speed in kbps of the internet network link. The user must also enter the IP of a ping response, which NetSplitter uses to check if a link is up or down.
The newest version of NetSplitter - 20021115 - has been tested to work on Linux and BSD.
