Open64

Open64 is a noteworthy open research compiler that has received contributions from multiple compiler groups internationally. Initially known as Pro64, Open64 was formed by SGI and licensed under the GNU Public License (GPL). Derived from SGI's MIPSPro compiler, Open64 is the result of extensive work done by Intel Corporation and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who created the Open Research Compiler (ORC) - a specially modified version of Open64 created for researchers. These changes were then integrated back into the main Open64 source tree in 2005.

Open64 has been retargetted to cater to various architectures. Pathscale used Open64 as the base to create EkoPath, a compiler aimed at the AMD64 architecture. The University of Delaware's Computer Architecture and Parallel Systems Laboratory (CAPSL) modified Open64 to create Kylin Compiler, a compiler for the X-Scale architecture. Currently, CAPSL and Hewlet-Packard are working on Osprey, a project to replace Open64's frontend with the updated version of GCC.

Open64 includes compilers for C, C++, and Fortran90/95 compilers for the IA-64 Linux ABI and API standards. Currently at version 4.0, the project's gatekeepers are Professor Guang Gao and CAPSL at the University of Delaware. Overall, Open64 is a promising open research compiler that has garnered significant attention from various compiler groups worldwide.
