Developed by Luca De Marini
OpenGEU is an amazing operating system that is based on the popular Linux Distribution Ubuntu. It is a full-fledged and functional OS designed by Luca D.M, an Italian artist, and is perfect for any PC ranging from desktops to laptops to even virtual machines. The OS combines the best of both worlds- the power and simplicity of Ubuntu and some parts of the Gnome Desktop, with the stunning eye-candy of Enlightenment DR17.

The user experience with OpenGEU would certainly be novel to anyone, especially those who have tried running a stand-alone E17 Desktop in the past. E17 presents a visually striking desktop shell built on a window manager, library, desktop, and various modules and applications. However, it is not sufficient to make your desktop fully functional, and expecting it to become a full Desktop Environment like Gnome, KDE, or XFCE is strange.

This is where the OpenGEU comes into the picture. It completes the missing parts of the E17 Desktop Shell and WM with a host of tools and applications from the Gnome Desktop. This is entirely natural as it would be unreasonable to assume that E17 should provide a complete set of applications based on ETK rather than GTK. OpenGEU offers a classic Ubuntu set of applications mixed with those created for E17, resulting in a usable and productive Enlightenment 0.17 Desktop.

The performance and advantages of OpenGEU are impressive. Being a lightweight desktop shell, E17 ensures that your computer runs at a breakneck speed with incredible 2D effects like animations, fading, shadows, etc. It does not need a 3D card for all of its effects to run smoothly, and Xcompmgr is provided by default in OpenGEU, allowing you to test every composite effect, like real transparencies and shadows, at any time you wish. The best part is, even on a relatively old computer or a virtual machine, you can have a staggering level of eye-candy without Compiz or a fully-functional 3D video card.

OpenGEU's ultimate goal is to become a completely community-based OS, aiming for a better and more seamless integration between E17 and Gnome. Programmers, coders, and anyone who can modify certain aspects of this distro to improve user experience are welcome, as are new-comers who are willing to help the project blossom even better than its first release, OpenGEU 7.04 - Prima Luna. If you aren't a programmer, click on the contribute link to learn how you can help OpenGEU in some way.
