openMosix

April 11, 2005
openMosix is a Linux kernel tool that enables clustering for single-system images.
Version kernel-2.4.26
License GPL
Platform Linux
Supported Languages English
Homepage openmosix.sourceforge.net
Developed by Moreno Baricevic
OpenMosix is a powerful Linux kernel extension that transforms a network of conventional computers into a high-performance supercomputer for Linux applications. This innovative solution utilizes a kernel patch for Linux to create a cost-efficient, fast, and reliable single-system image (SSI) clustering platform that enables linear scalability and adaptiveness.

Once openMosix is installed, the nodes in the cluster immediately begin communicating with each other, ensuring that the cluster dynamically self-adapts to the workload. If a node is too busy, processes originating from that node are seamlessly migrated to other nodes that have available resources. The innovative migration process is designed to continuously optimize resource allocation, making openMosix the ideal software for users looking to maximize computing power.

One of the most significant features of openMosix is Auto Discovery, which enables new nodes to be added while the cluster is running. Without any programming required, the cluster automatically adapts to the new resources, expanding the computing power without any downtime. Unlike other clustering solutions that require application-specific programming, openMosix's extensions are contained within the kernel, which enables all Linux applications to benefit automatically and transparently from the distributed computing concept of openMosix.

The cluster behaves much like a Symmetric Multi-Processor, providing a high-performance computing platform for clusters with over a thousand nodes that can be themselves SMPs. Additionally, the openMosix Community is highly active, providing add-on applications and helpful information to all users. The openMosix Add-Ons and Community page lists all the shared applications, providing users with the information they need to enhance their openMosix experience.

Overall, openMosix is a powerful, innovative, and highly effective SSI clustering platform with robust features and an active community. And most importantly, it is easy to use and is all GPL'd, making it a cost-efficient alternative for users looking for a highly scalable and adaptive computing platform.
