OSTV

September 11, 2009
OSTV is a Linux-based TV and video player that allows users to access various channels and play video content seamlessly.
Version 0.65
License GPL v3
Platform Linux
Supported Languages English
Homepage code.google.com
Developed by Dale Friedkin
OSTV is an innovative, lightweight and feature-packed video/TV player that works flawlessly on any Linux system. With less than 50kb of code, this software does not require a high-performance system to play HD videos. Moreover, it works seamlessly with the software you already have on your computer. OSTV supports OSD menus that can be operated using a remote control or keyboard (requires LIRC).

OSTV opens up a world of streaming content by supporting over the air (OTA) and cable TV (non-encrypted), including High Definition, with a full-featured DVR. It plays vodcasts and web videos like YouTube from an updateable menu. Additionally, it automatically downloads shows via bittorrent.

OSTV is a command layer for MPlayer and works harmoniously with MPlayer's OSD Menus. This software plays videos and directories as a playlist. It also accesses a vast number of high-quality real-time streaming content for free, without ever buffering or causing any interruptions.

With OSTV, it is possible to watch OTA TV with as little as $30 for a USB device or PCI card and a small antenna (usually included) along with this software. OSTV lets you timeshift, pause live TV, flip channels, and record OTA TV. Furthermore, OSTV supports unencrypted QAM (Cable TV).

OSTV integrates the evolving world of internet video inside the traditional TV experience of slouching back on your sofa while using your remote control. It plays web video programs and automatically downloads TV shows via Bittorrent. For programmers, OSTV has an extensible plugin architecture.

OSTV is unlike any other video/TV player in the market, as it throws away the outdated Media Center model. This software has its unique programming, which lets you watch videos and TV without incorporating music and photos. OSTV maintains its interface with “Background Video" whenever it does not play anything. The chosen background video can be any video you save to ~/.ostv/default_video/.

Developers of MPlayer have created a comprehensive player with a slave mode, which allows for external programs to control it. MPlayer also has a little-known OSD menuing system, which OSTV has leveraged to create its own control using MPlayer's slave mode. With less than 50kb of bash scripts, a single hacker has achieved something groundbreaking. This software can rival other megabytes of code and applications developed by teams of developers that are often invasive and intrusive to any system.
