I recently had the opportunity to try out the Paco project, a source code package organizer designed specifically for Unix/Linux systems. Originally developed to streamline package management during LFS system installation, Paco offers a range of features for managing packages and installing files on Unix/Linux systems.
One of Paco's key features is its ability to wrap the "make install" command during package installation and generate a log of all installed files. This makes it easy to keep track of which packages have been installed and what files have been added to your system.
In addition to its package installation capabilities, Paco provides a variety of options for printing package information in different formats. It also includes basic operations for removing packages and performing other package management tasks.
Like CheckInstall, Paco uses a library that is preloaded before installation to log filesystem alterations caused by system calls during installation. However, unlike CheckInstall, Paco is a stand-alone package manager that doesn't create rpm or dpkg packages. It even comes with a script (superpaco) that allows you to install binary packages from rpm, dpkg, or slackware.
For users who prefer a visual interface, Paco also includes Gpaco, a GTK graphic interface that comes bundled with the Paco tarball and is installed by default. Keep in mind that Gpaco requires GTK (2.6 or later), and pkg-config to function properly.
