Cocoon is a software framework for developing web applications using Java. However, there is now a version of Cocoon available that does not require Java. This allows for developers to have more options when choosing how to build their web applications.
Paloose is a simplified software that uses PHP5, serving as an alternative to Apache Cocoon. As a developer, I found it frustrating that most ISPs don't support Java/Tomcat for web sites without costly professional add-ons. Fortunately, Paloose uses PHP5 (note that it does not support PHP4), allowing me to create a simplified version of Cocoon in PHP5.
I initially developed Paloose for personal use, as I wanted to incorporate XML into my website, however, I was unable to afford the expense of a full Cocoon installation. Since then, I have used Paloose for various sites and found it to be a great substitute for Cocoon, except for the most complex sites.
