PaperScope is a software tool designed to explore the Astrophysics Data System (ADS), which is a database containing published astrophysics papers. With PaperScope, users can identify citation and reference relationships between papers and visualize these relationships to make finding papers of interest easier.
Use this software to construct reference or citation chains as well as identify common references and citations between several key papers. PaperScope also aims to bridge the gap between published papers and the Virtual Observatory. The developers of PaperScope are working on tools that will enable users to move from looking at a paper on the software to finding any published data or tools associated with that paper on the VO. These tools are expected to be ready by October 2007.
PaperScope provides tools that allow users to search the ADS for a paper and then map it into a 2D graph of nodes and edges. Each node represents a paper, and each edge represents a relationship between two papers. The initial graph contains a node for the selected paper and nodes for all the papers that it references and papers that cite it.
From there, users can expand the graph by selecting a paper and expanding its citations and references. Any new papers discovered are added, and the papers in common between the two selected papers are given a new edge to show the relationship. By expanding the graph, users can easily identify papers that share common references or citations and identify key papers in a particular field.
