PhiloLogic is a software engine created by ARTFL Project specially designed to enable text analysis in the field of digital humanities. It is a full-text database engine with advanced capabilities.
PhiloLogic, the search, retrieval, and analysis tool developed by the ARTFL Project and the Digital Library Development Center (DLDC) at the University of Chicago, is a Free Software implementation of PhiloLogic for large TEI-Lite document collections. The recent deployment of basic XML processing tools and the wide array of XML data specifications create an opportunity for the collaborative development of higher-level, interoperable tools for Humanities Computing applications.
The powerful TEI-XML encoding specification supports the development of rich textual data representations that require development of specialized sets of tools for specific tasks. PhiloLogic has been enhanced to offer support for a range of TEI-Lite (XML/SGML) encoded documents, including the Unicode character specification. Humanities Computing applications are well suited for open source development by a community with varying technical abilities, which is not well supported by the commercial sector.
PhiloLogic is a modular system that treats a textbase as a set of coordinated or related databases, including an object database, a word forms database, a word concordance index mapped to textual objects, and an object manager mapping text objects to byte offsets in data files. Each of these databases is stored and managed using its subsystem, and the system is designed to provide as many features as possible without requiring significant administrative or development work.
Originally designed to support large databases of French literature, PhiloLogic has been extended to support different textual and hypermedia databases in partnership with academic and commercial institutions. Some key features of PhiloLogic include its speed, robustness, low dependency, TEI-Lite XML/SGML with Unicode support, MySQL back-end for bibliographic searching, optional XML or non-XML bibliographic loaders, fault tolerance, and open source.
The latest release of CGIs has been modified to support multilingual user interfaces, with 300 system messages translated into French and modularized into language-specific arrays. Additionally, word padding in KWIC reports has been fixed. In all, PhiloLogic is a light, fast, extensively used and tested system that offers out of the box operation with many configuration options and interoperability across certain systems.
