Pkt is a packet archiving software that uses XML and parity to ensure data reliability, with a focus on network packet capture and analysis.
I recently had the opportunity to try out the pkt project, an XML-based packet archiver with parity. Overall, I found it to be a powerful and flexible tool for handling a variety of file manipulation tasks.
One of the things I like most about pkt is its flexibility. It can handle files for backing up documents, transferring them across networks, emailing them, and sharing them by other means (such as peer-to-peer networks). And it uses plugin filters to get the job done, meaning that it can handle virtually any format available as long as there is a plugin for it.
In addition to its flexibility, pkt has a wide range of features designed to help you manage your files. It handles encryption, compression, conversion, parity checking, decryption, decoding, repairing, rebuilding, and other tasks using a universal file format (XML-based). It can output in 7-bit ASCII which is UTF encoded and is compatible with XML parsers, or in 8-bit compressed XML packets using one of several compression algorithms. pkt tries to use the best algorithms available to ensure that your files are as secure and efficient as possible.
Some of the noteworthy features of pkt include its BZIP2 compression system, variable LDPC parity protection and data recovery, NIST FIPS-197 AES 256-bit encryption system, RIPEMD 160-bit secure hashing algorithm, DoD 5220.22-M (CLEAR) secure file wiping, cross-platform compatibility (with 64-bit support if your platform allows), and more. It even includes basic utilities like calc, clock, conv, hexed, and file merging, hashing, crlf conversion, and copying utilities.
One thing that really stood out to me about pkt is its pluggable CLI or Thinlet XML GUI interface. You can choose to use the command-line interface, or you can use the built-in Thinlet XML GUI interface to manage your files. And if that's not enough, there are even additional plugins available for UUEncoding & UUDecoding, SSH/SCP/STUN & VNC support, and more.
