Plosxom is a PHP-based blog software created by Pali Dhar as a rewrite of phposxom. This blogging tool stores posts in text files, while its categorization feature is organized into simple directories. One of its bestselling points is its extensive plugin API. Plosxom’s plugin options allow you to add any desired functionality or replace existing ones without a hassle. Phposxom is a PHP-based rewrite of blosxom but is now defunct, hence the need for Plosxom.

I use Plosxom because I cannot run Perl where my site is hosted, and it is compact. Nevertheless, the source code of phposxom was terrible, un-maintainable, and not efficiently styled. Since I use Plosxom daily, I decided to initiate a complete rewrite of the program, and it was named Plosxom. The majority of Blosxom forks out there, especially the PHP ports, have been abandoned. Most developers justify their decision not to reinvent the wheel by stating that further development would take it too far from existing projects like WordPress.

However, I have a different perspective on this matter. Despite having storage backends that are irreplaceable, WordPress relies on MySQL, the worst database system worldwide. Conversely, Plosxom allows you to create a SQLite or any backend of choice, even a MySQL backend. Additionally, WordPress is a massive package that comes with lots of source code, which leads to numerous security issues. In Plosxom, we regard security with the utmost importance. There is less CGI input employed in the software, and anything that enters the script is filtered to eliminate bogus characters, which will avert future attacks.

Plosxom does not come with an administration backend because the creation of text files or uploading them are the only necessary tasks. Consequently, the blog cannot be hijacked like many other blogs could be. The Plosxom core is tiny, written in only two days but is not inferior in functionality. The program is augmented by numerous plugins that provide various functionalities. For instance, some plugins, such as text file management, are so critical that they are coded as core functions. Since we use smarty as our templates engine, enhancing Plosxom is unbound with endless plugin possibilities. You can write a simple plugin with a simple smarty function, and voila!

Regrettably, Plosxom does not have built-in comment support due to security reasons. Hence, comments are temporary outsourced to Haloscan. Nevertheless, anyone can create a comment plugin anytime as it’s an open source program.
