psDooM

December 12, 2006
psDooM is a monitoring and management software for *nix systems that tracks and oversees processes in real-time.
Version 2000.05.03.b
License GPL
Platform Linux
Supported Languages English
Homepage psdoom.sourceforge.net
Developed by David Koppenhofer
PsDooM project is an impressive process monitor and manager designed for *nix systems. Its functioning can be paralleled to a graphical interface that incorporates powerful commands such as 'ps', 'renice', and 'kill'. The project is based on the frameworks of XDoom, which in turn, is inspired by id Software's classic game, 'Doom'. The idea behind psDooM originated as a proof-of-concept initiative by Dennis Chao, who proposed the concept of using 'Doom' as an innovative tool for system administration at the University of New Mexico.

Dennis then took the sources of XDoom, which were licensed under GPL, and wrote additional code to transform the system processes into monsters. Participants would then utilize 'Doom''s gameplay mechanics, such as injuring and killing monsters, to renice and kill corresponding processes. The result was the birth of psDooM, which has now established itself as a complete process manager and process monitoring tool for professionals.

In the latest version, users can experience a few essential changes that smooth out the overall functioning of psDooM. Firstly, shell scripts in 'contrib' directory have been modified to reduce command length while displaying with 'ps'. Another noteworthy change is that the user can now use the '~/.psdoom' folder to store all saved games, configuration files, and other required files, instead of the previously used '~/.xdoom' folder. Additionally, users need to move the current '.doomrc' and '.xdlaunchrc' files to '~/.psdoom' to get started.

Finally, PSdoom references have been elegantly added to the startup header text, X resources, and window title bar for convenience. Modifications have also been made to 'xdlaunch (ps-xdlaunch)' with a new ability that enables the user to pass PSdoom-specific command line flags to ps-xdoom through ps-xdlaunch. All in all, the software has delivered a compelling and user-friendly experience to its users, making psDooM an essential tool for process management in *nix systems.
