The Python logging module is a standard logging system for Python programs, heavily influenced by log4j from the Apache project. The package is included in versions 2.3 and later, meaning that only users of earlier Python versions would need to install it separately.
The need for a standard logging system in Python was well-documented in PEP 282 and endorsed by the BDFL in the Parade of the PEPs. The logging package described here was already being developed at the same time and aligned well with the intent and design laid out in PEP 282. It took inspiration from JSR-47 and log4j, as explained in more detail on this page.
Following tweaks to the package to incorporate feedback on PEP 282, this page now follows the same structure as the original PEP. This logging package is now a part of Python 2.3, but for those with earlier versions of Python, it can be downloaded from here and used with versions 1.5.2 through to 2.2.x.
