Remembrance Agent

February 5, 2008
Remembrance Agent is an associative memory tool that functions as an Emacs plug-in.

Developed by Bradley Rhodes
Remembrance Agent (Remem) is a highly useful Emacs plug-in that enhances your associative memory. It continuously watches over your activity and provides document suggestions that are relevant to the task at hand. Unlike search engines, which aid in direct recall, Remem is a tool that helps with associative recall.

The suggested documents are updated every few seconds based on the last hundred-or-so words surrounding the cursor. These documents are pulled from your own text documents and archives, including email archives, HTML, LaTex, and plain text documents. The suggested documents are displayed in a buffer located at the bottom of your Emacs window, making it easy to access without interrupting your workflow.

Remem runs in most Unix systems, including Emacs and XEmacs, and maybe even in properly souped-up Mac or Windows systems. However, there are still limitations. For example, ra-index and ra-retrieve now work under Windows, but there still appears to be challenges with Emacs and remem.el communicating with the ra-retrieve process, particularly in XP and NT.

Another limitation is that dates are not yet indexed, so hovering over or querying a date does not result in any document suggestions. There is also no machine learning for different field weights, and it does not handle gzipped files. Finally, it may need GNU make to compile in some platforms.

However, this release removes some of the previous limitations. The include of malloc.h in dateyacc.c is no longer an issue, since OSX has difficulty recognizing it and the function appears to be unnecessary. In addition, the configuration has been updated, so /sw/include is added to configure.in and /sw/lib has been added to main/Makefile.am so that OSX can easily find the PCRE libraries when they are installed using Fink. Finally, the "missing" script has been updated to a later version with the following command: "cd remem-2.12; automake --add-missing -c; autoreconf".

Overall, Remembrance Agent (Remem) is an essential tool for anyone who requires quick access to associated information in their workflow. With a few limitations and required tools, this plug-in can help users increase their productivity and efficiency when conducting research or other information-heavy tasks.
