Rippy the Aggregator is a software written using vanilla PHP, serving as a lightweight RSS aggregator. If you're like me, there are several websites you visit regularly or semi-regularly to check for the latest news, and several others that post regular updates but you don't visit because it's too much work. Also, if you run your own website, you'd like to have people check it regularly, but it's likely they won't. Rippy the Aggregator aims to solve these problems.

RSS is a standard format that websites use to publish their updates in a machine-readable format, and this software is an appropriate client to quickly download updates from all the websites you're interested in, and present them in a customized list of all the newest items. Many software applications already generate RSS files, and there are services like Syndic8 that compile lists of RSS feeds. So, all that remains is getting an appropriate client. However, most client programs available online don't work, and some are available only for Windows.

The best client this software author could find was written in Python, but had to start two background server daemons to run. So, this software called Rippy was created to fill the gap. The name "Rippy the Aggregator" comes from an Arrogant Worms song about a cute, cuddly alligator who goes "chomp, chomp, chomp," down in the bottom of the swamp. The program is written in PHP, which is customizable under the GNU GPL version 2 and doesn't require any compiled-in optional libraries that don't come with PHP. Also, it stores its cached data in flat files, needing no database.

In this new release, parser ruggedness and general stability improved, with support added for setting options like user agent and proxying when acting as an HTTP client. The software's key features include its cute name, being written in PHP, storing cached data in flat files, and being customizable under the GNU GPL version 2.
