KControl now offers Service Menu Management to help organize suggested ideas for service menus.
As a software reviewer, I would like to share my thoughts on the new kcontrol option for enabling and disabling actions for different file types. This feature allows service menus to be installed and managed with ease. It would be great if this control center window allows this function to be performed, too.
One of the benefits of this feature is that users can choose which actions that KIM (KDE Image Service Menu) is capable of, and have them displayed in the right-click menu when selecting a JPG file. It also provides the option to install the service menu for either the current user, located somewhere in /home/~/.kde/.../konqueror/services..., or for all users by checking the appropriate checkbox that requires a root password to copy the necessary files to the service menu directories.
In addition, the service menu management control center should allow users to move up and down a service menu in the right-click ACTIONS sub-menu. Users should be able to select the submenus from the installed service menu, and add only the ones they want to have for the desired file type. This feature allows users to add specific services that they prefer, such as the kim-resize picture and a submenu from a k3b service menu (add to data disc), and place them in the JPG file type submenu, as shown in the screenshot.
For some service menus like kim's selected "web-export," a '>' sign appears at the end of their names, indicating an included submenu that cannot be picked or changed individually. Users may not have the option to choose which 'webexport' options should be included in the 'web-export' submenu. This feature has limitations to ensure effective management of service menus.
Another suggestion is to mark the service menu in red fonts if it's installed for all users using the root password. If prompted for uninstallation, it should ask for the root password.
Since the kde service menus were handled with old-fashioned install.sh scripts or by hand with a READme instruction, the new feature allows users to install service menus in the old-fashioned way. This feature is included in a special 'KDE service menu' package handled by kcontrol, improving KDE's support for service menus. The feature also allows users to have a choice in the type of service menu included in the right-click menu.
