SlackFire is an iptables script designed for use with Slackware Linux, my preferred distribution. The software is designed to provide simple but detailed configuration options for a stateful firewall, suitable for protecting either an individual machine or a small network.
Now, you might be thinking, why do we need yet another iptables script when there are so many available on the internet, many of which feature attractive graphical user interfaces? For me, there were a few key reasons. Firstly, I didn't want to be restricted to only managing and configuring the firewall via a GUI. Also, I needed to work with machines on a LAN that have routable IP addresses - while some scripts featured this capability, they were few and far between. Even fewer articulated fine-tuned rules.
Most scripts that permit outgoing connections usually do so without restriction. However, I needed to limit both incoming and outgoing traffic - not just incoming traffic as is typically the case. Finally, I wanted the configuration process to be as easy as possible - without requiring edits to the main script - so that it could be undertaken even by someone with minimal expertise in iptables configuration. As a result, writing my own script was easier than modifying someone else's.
