I recently had the opportunity to use SmallSQL, and I must say it's the ultimate Java Desktop SQL Database Engine available. With its JDBC 3.0 API, SmallSQL is a complete solution for storing and managing data on Java-based applications.

When it comes to starting with SmallSQL, there are two easy-to-follow solutions. Firstly, you can convert an existing database with JDbConverter - an open-source tool that helps convert one database management system to another via JDBC. Secondly, you can create a database with a GUI tool, and although SmallSQL doesn't have its one, we recommend two popular tools - JDBC Navigator and SQuirreL SQL Client.

JDBC Navigator is a free graphical Java tool that you can easily download and use to create a SmallSQL database. After download and installation, select the "Open JDBC Data Source" option and input the driver class and URL. Then click on "Connection | SQL Window," enter "CREATE DATABASE db1" and press ENTER. You can connect to the alias Small SQL db1 to access your database.

In comparison, the SQuirreL SQL Client is an open-source graphical Java tool you can download and install. Here, too, you can create a SmallSQL database in a few simple steps. Select "Create a new JDBC Driver" and "Create a new Alias" on the tool's interface. Set the "JDBC Driver" to Small SQL and input its URL as jdbc:smallsql:. Then, click on "Connect" to the alias and enter "CREATE DATABASE db1." Once done, save and close the window, and you're good to go.
