Developed by The SmoothWall Open Source Project
SmoothWall is one of the most reliable software choices for security systems. It is an open-source code that is well proven, highly configurable, and secure. Its operating system has a hardened subset of GNU/Linux that eliminates the need for a separate operating system to install. The software is designed to be user-friendly and can be configured through a web-based GUI. The most interesting feature of SmoothWall is that it requires no knowledge of Linux to install or use, making it versatile and accessible.

The origins of the SmoothWall project can be traced back to Summer 2000 when Lawrence Manning, Richard Morrell, Jon Fautley, and Tom Ellis founded it. They released the first version, version 0.9, via the SourceForge open-source collaboration site in August of that year. The aim was to create a firewall operating system distribution based on Linux that would transform low-end, possibly redundant, Intel and compatible PCs into hardened internet firewalls. From these small beginnings, the project grew rapidly. Hundreds of copies were being downloaded every month, and soon thousands of people were all over the world using it. SmoothWall quickly became a popular open-source software project, with new features like ISDN and ADSL support, Squid web proxying, and additional languages added.

The initial design goals of the SmoothWall project are still the foundation of the project today. These include enabling the local network to be protected from outside attack while not interfering with user activities, making it simple enough for home users to install without any prior knowledge of Linux required, supporting a range of network cards, modems, and other hardware, working with a variety of connection methods and ISPs globally, and improving the ease of use, management, and configuration by using tools such as web access interface.

SmoothWall is a versatile software choice and is designed for use by anyone from home users to systems administrators. It can run on virtually any 32-bit Intel or i386-compatible PC from a 486 to an Athlon or Pentium 4. SmoothWall's capability to convert a PC into a dedicated firewall appliance is remarkable. All one needs is an internet connection, some simple networking equipment to connect it to the rest of the private LAN, and the SmoothWall CD image file.

Overall, SmoothWall is an ideal choice if you seek a secure, reliable, versatile, and user-friendly software choice for your security systems. Its open-source code and compatibility with virtually any 32-bit Intel or i386-compatible PC make it an accessible choice for everyone. By using SmoothWall, you get solid protection that can be trusted.
