smp-encode

SMP-encode is a powerful and compact utility that can be used for encoding groups of audio files in parallel, making full use of multiple CPUs with single-threaded encoders. This project supports OggEnc and LAME, providing users with a range of options to choose from.

When using SMP-encode, users need to invoke the program with three mandatory arguments. The first argument is the "-e " option, where the encoder can be either "lame" or "oggenc". The encoder arguments are currently hardcoded in encoder.cpp, but they will soon be defined on SMP-encode's command line.

The second mandatory argument is "-p ", where "N" can be any number greater than 0. Once this is specified, SMP-encode generates N processes to encode the files provided, distributing the files evenly among them. The last mandatory argument is a choice between a list of files, given either explicitly or via the wildcard (e.g. ./*.wav), or the -d < directory > argument.

Note that successful invocations of SMP-encode will not display anything during runtime. However, in the future, progress info will be reported.

Users can compile SMP-encode by running make and then make install. The program will generate a stripped binary named smp-encode, which can be moved to /usr/local/bin.

If users need to add encoders or edit their argvs, they can find all the necessary information in encoder.cpp, where all that stuff is done.

The latest release of SMP-encode comes with a complete rewrite using the GTK+2.0 UI. This update includes features like thread control (pause and cancel), implementation of many options from LAME and oggenc in the GUI, progress bars that indicate individual thread progress, and many other tweaks and bugfixes related to the rewrite. Users who require a reliable and efficient audio encoder should definitely try SMP-encode.
