SortImages is a Java-based image sorting software that focuses on organizing images captured by digital cameras. The program uses the EXIF-header of the JPEG-files to sort images by year, month, and day, copying them from the source directory to a central target directory. The images are then renamed to reflect their capture date and time, resulting in an image repository organized by capture date.

In addition to this, SortImages stores some of the image meta-information in a database, along with the MD5 hash of the image as the primary key. The program checks each image before copying it to ensure that it is not already in the database. If it is not, the image is sorted into the appropriate folder. Currently, SortImages only supports the mySQL database. However, future releases will introduce additional database platform support.

To run the software, users need to have an appropriate Java Virtual Machine installed. However, the program requires a minimum version of JDK 1.4, as the EXIF-Reader library utilizes some functions from this version. Upon installation, SortImages runs smoothly, automating the process of sorting image files captured by digital cameras.

To use SortImages, users need to specify the path to their photos using a command like "java -jar SortImages-20031212.jar." If there are issues encountered during the usage of SortImages, a detailed error message will be displayed, allowing for troubleshooting.

The latest version of SortImages includes an optional automated database dump feature, making it easier to manage and backup image data stored in the database. Overall, SortImages is a reliable and efficient tool for sorting and organizing image files, especially those captured by digital cameras.
