SPBLinux

December 29, 2005
SPBLinux is a compact and modular distribution software that operates entirely in RAM.
Version 2.1b13
License GPL
Platform Linux
Supported Languages English
Homepage spblinux.sourceforge.net
Developed by Christian Ostheimer
SPBLinux is a modular mini distribution that can be booted from USB and runs entirely in RAM. This software is based on Busybox and Midnight Commander, with optional DirectFB and Mozilla since version 2.1. It is also possible to modify and create one's modules inside SPBLinux to fully tailor the experience.

One of the key features of SPBLinux is that it loads from USB storage or other boot devices and runs in RAM. After bootup, no access to boot devices is needed. The system is modular, with the basic system fitting on two 1.4 MB floppy disks (Linux 2.6 with Midnight Commander) while other components are added as addons in bz2 (and sqf) files in subfolders of folder spblinux on the boot device. At boot time, the user has a choice of which addon subfolders to load through the grub menu and/or grub edit, and the command loadaddon enables users to manually load addons when SPBLinux is running.

SPBLinux can also be built and modified within SPBLinux via the command changebz2 your_addon.bz2, which opens the addon using Midnight Commander. Additionally, if the gentoo chroot environment is installed, programs can be emerged and compiled. More information can be found in the SPBLinux Wiki.

This software is targeted towards users who want to create their own customized system. Support and documentation include installation on fat formatted USB devices, running SPBLinux, and using the script makebootable.

The latest release of SPBLinux features smooth and fast running on coLinux with standard disclaimer that coLinux and the X server XMing are beta software that may crash your PC. Scribus 1.23 has also been compiled for Linux and can run as a window of Windows XP, with the package scribus-spb2-colinux-xp containing all required components. Users who want to make their own customized version of SPBLinux/coLinux can start with minimal-spb2-colinux-xp.zip. Additionally, SSH daemon is running by default (with the root password set to 'root') and optional access from SPBLinux to Windows via a shared folder is also available. The English (default) and German user interface are preconfigured.
