Developed by Joe Kamphaus
SpeakTclEdit is a highly capable Linux console text editor that comes packed with a wide range of useful features. Some of these features include spell check functionality, the ability to print files directly to a printer, and tools for cutting, copying, and pasting text. One of the standout features of this software is the fact that it supports a number of text-to-speech systems such as festival, flite, and cepstral speech synthesis software.

To use SpeakTclEdit, you will need to have a few other software packages installed on your system, including tcl/tclsh, a text-to-speech system like festival, PerlSpeak.pm, aspell, a2ps, and cups. Fortunately, an install.sh script has been included with the software to make the installation process as easy as possible.

Once installed, you can take advantage of a range of new features in this latest version. Some of the updates include support for the flite text-to-speech engine, the ability to save and exit using the Control-X command, and useful Alt-S spell checking features. Additionally, Alt-P Print file function support has been added, which requires both the cups and a2ps packages for printing.

SpeakTclEdit now also includes support for configuration files. The software will first read /etc/linuxpeaks/speaktcleditrc and then $HOME/.linuxspeaks/speaktcleditrc, allowing for easy customization. An example configuration file is included with the software.

Finally, this latest version of SpeakTclEdit has also added copy, cut, and paste functions. Some of the key bindings have been changed, with ^b beginning selection, ^c to copy, ^x to cut, and ^v to paste. There are also new command-line options available including "quiet" to allow you to turn off status prompts, and "mail" to turn off status prompts and confirmation requests when closing via Control-Q. Overall, SpeakTclEdit is a capable and feature-rich text editor for Linux users.
