SubPar offers an arcade-style shooter game experience that is entirely free of cost. In this game, you play the role of a ship commander tasked with defending your vessel from enemy attacks. The game is set in the year 2063, where humankind has reached Alpha Centauri, only to discover that the system is not as empty as once presumed. As the "Jhonus" probe explores the system, an alien probe also happens to be mapping the area simultaneously.
An unfortunate incident occurs when the Jhonus probe mistakenly identifies the alien probe as an asteroid rich with ore and fires its mining lasers, ultimately destroying the alien probe. This misunderstanding is taken as an act of aggression by the alien race, resulting in numerous alien raids into our solar system, some of which have come dangerously close to Earth's orbit.
Unfortunately, the man power of mankind's defense forces had been downsized after Mars became the last of the rogue planets to join the Sol Treaty. This put mankind at a major disadvantage when defending against the initial attacks on Io and Europa, but they were able to ultimately repel the invaders and limp back to base.
To defend human settlements during this critical time, the United government has implemented a new policy of hiring mercenaries to help secure the outer solar system. Players in SubPar are tasked with becoming these mercenaries and protecting humanity by taking down as many alien invaders as possible.
Gameplay in SubPar involves surviving thirty-five, 30-second waves of attacking aliens. By collecting power-ups, players can boost their ship's health and increase firepower, providing an edge in battle. However, players must also be careful, as enemy fire can strip them of their power-ups and reset their upgrade cycle.
Power-ups are granted every ten kills initially, but as the game progresses, players will require more kills to gain power-ups. Controls in SubPar are simple, with players using the arrow keys to maneuver their ship and the space bar to fire weapons. The ultimate goal of the game is to return as a hero, having defended the solar system and earned a king's ransom for doing so.
