It places small squares on your screen and subsumes them into larger ones as the screen fills. The software works well on a square, power-of-2 screen resolution, but it is likely that most people don't have this type of monitor. However don't worry, because it works perfectly well on a rectangular power-of-2 screen too. During development and testing of the software on various machines, it worked perfectly on 1024x768 and 1280x1024 screen resolution.
Flexible control of the base square size could improve the effect on other monitor dimensions. Subsume has plenty of configuration controls that are very easy to understand, including setting the base size of the squares using the power-of-2 slider. It also has a pop-up menu to set the repeat style along with other controls that allow the choice to have subsumption progressively darken the screen as squares are subsumed.
Other controls include the choice of whether to animate the subsumption process or not. The software works faster without animation. You can also choose to have a "grid" border drawn, which is visually stunning when everything else is turned off. Finally, you have the choice to set the speed of the drawing process or switch it off completely, which is a good option, as it saves the CPU from getting eaten up.
