SystemVerilog is a Vim plugin that provides syntax highlighting for IEEE 1800 SystemVerilog, which is the first industry-standard hardware description and verification language (HDVL). This standard is a substantial extension of the established IEEE 1364 Verilog language. Vim, first released by Bram Moolenaar in 1991, was designed as an extended version of the Vi editor, with many additional features specifically useful for editing program source code.

Though Vim is available on a variety of different operating systems, it is most popular on Unix-like platforms. It is released under a software license compatible with the GNU General Public License and is considered free and open source software. Vim has a text user interface in which users provide commands, rather than relying on menus or icons. gVim, Vim's GUI mode, offers menus, toolbars and other familiar user interface elements while still relying on command-line mode. It may take time and effort to master Vim but, having done so, users find editing code is more efficient as a result.

Vim includes a built-in tutorial for beginners, a comprehensive Vim Users' Manual with details of basic and more advanced features, and a built-in help facility that allows users to query and navigate through commands and features.

Installation of SystemVerilog is straightforward. After dropping the file into the correct directory, which must be created if it does not already exist, users should augment their ~/.vim/filetype.vim file with added lines to detect the file extension and set the file type accordingly. The SV.vba file can be sourced to autoinstall with newer versions of Vim.
